Travel Coffee Break #157 - New York Travel Festival & Social Media Influence
Later this month (18-19 April) the New York Travel Festival (#NYTF) gets underway with a wide ranging programme of events designed for travellers, travel writers, and travel industry.

So, in this week's edition, the plan is to talk with Roni Weiss, the founder & organiser of NYTF, about the festival itself, AND to get the ball rolling with the kind of discussion that will be taking place during the festival, in this case about Travel and the impact of social media influencers/marketers.

So, we'll be joined by a number of guests who have views on on the topic, some of whom will be appearing as speakers at NYTF, and I'll be confirming those speakers on the event page over the next few days, starting with...

Melvin Böcher - Owner of Traveldudes.org and co-founder iAmbassador (travel blogger collective).

Matthew Barker - Digital marketer & founder I&I Travel Media (digital travel marketing). Don't forget you can use the Q&A app (top right of video screen on the hangout event page) to ask questions before & during the hangout.

Restless Legs Reading Series: Storytime
Is it true that we are the stories we tell ourselves? Or, as Joan Didion said, do we tell ourselves stories in order to live? Or...do we get together on April 15 (Tax Day!) to hear some great travel tales, told by amazing writers, while we sip drinks, laugh, and forget about the maladies of the outside world? Let's go with that one!

This very special Restless Legs will feature a small handful of writers simply telling stories. No books. No magazines. No printed out articles to read from.

Storytellers include:

Robin Epstein, an accomplished writer who has penned humor books, young adult novels, and even sit-coms. She teaches at New York University.

Tom Downey, bon vivant, Contribing Writer at AFAR, and regular contributor to WSJ magazine and Smithsonian.

Matt Gross, erstwhile Frugal Traveler for the New York Times, who has written for AFAR, Bon Appetit, and plethora of other publications.

Pavia Rosati, the editor of Fathom Away (www.fathomaway.com)

Dan Saltzstein, an editor at the New York Times Travel section. Mr. Saltzstein also invents home cocktails in his spare time -- most recently "The Witty Comeback."

Their stories from the road will make you laugh, cry, inspire you to give it all up to start a petting zoo in Cambodia. Or, well, something like that.

So please join the gathering of the Restless Legs Society on April 15 in the upstairs room of the People Lounge on the Lower East Side.

Turnstile Tours' “Making It In NYC: Inside Industry Tour”
In timing with the New York Travel Festival, Turnstile Tours and the Brooklyn Navy Yard Center at BLDG 92 will be hosting a “Making It In NYC: Inside Industry Tour” on Friday, April 17, from 9:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. Tickets are $20 per person. Advance registration is required. The tour begins and ends at the Brooklyn Navy Yard Center at BLDG 92, located at the corner of Flushing and Carlton Avenues in Brooklyn.

This 90-minute guided tour begins at the Brooklyn Navy Yard Center at BLDG 92’s Making It In NYC gallery, an exhibit that explores a new era of manufacturing in New York City today. Participants will then head out into the Yard for an immersive look at “making it” then and now at the Yard.

Featured businesses on the April 17th tour include:

SITU Fabrication: (@situstudio) Bringing design, fabrication, and research under one company, Situ’s team is able to tackle complex building challenges using a wide variety of tools, materials, and approaches. In their fabrication space, depending on which project they are working on, attendees might see how their metal workers construct sculptural elements for an artist’s installation, how they craft complex shapes using their robotic 5-dimensional router, how plastics are molded for interior design pieces on their thermomolder, or how they designed and built the “Making It In NYC” exhibit in BLDG 92.

AHeirloom: (@a_heirloom) Founded by husband and wife team Amy Stringer-Mowat and Bill Mowat, AHeirloom manufacturers a variety of wooden home goods, though they are best known for their cutting boards shaped like the states. Thanks to digital design tools and computer-controlled machinery, they can make these complex shapes – and even add custom details like your hometown or an inscription – quickly and affordably.

NYTF ’15 attendees can apply the discount code “NYTF2015″ toward the cost of the “Making It In NYC: Inside Industry Tour” along with other Turnstile Tours’ offerings now and throughout May. To purchase tickets, visit this link.

ADA Turns 25: Social Inclusion and Cultural Accessibility
Limited Capacity seats available

In honor of the disability rights movement and the 25th anniversary of the passage of the ADA, join the Museum Access Consortium to learn how art museums, historic sites, zoos, performing arts venues, theaters, and parks have collaborated across institutions and with disability communities to create innovative and inclusive facilities and programs for all visitors. From the impact of multi-sensory engagement on visitors with memory loss and their loved ones to low and high-tech approaches that have been effective in engaging people who have autism, this session will feature case studies from New York’s cultural institutions in efforts to spark creative thinking and inspire dialogue amongst presenters and attendees about what each of us can do to shape a culture of inclusion for people of all abilities, across the travel industry and beyond.

About Museum Access Consortium (MAC): MAC is an association that regularly hosts professional development workshops and offers a network of mutual support to help practitioners engage with disability advocates and people who have disabilities to learn about, implement, and strengthen best practices for access and inclusion in cultural facilities of all types throughout the New York metro area and beyond.

An Honest Living: A Discussion of Ethics for Travel Writers and Editors (presented by Outbounding)
Limited Capacity seats available

Our panelists will look at the state of travel media today and the ethical issues that sponsored content and native content, as well as sponsored travel, raise for travel writers and photographers. What are the implications of the changing landscape for larger outlets, blogs, and individual content creators? Where is travel media headed next and how will consumers’ interest in travel content be satisfied in the future? What’s in store for writers who have focused their careers on and made their living by writing travel content—is that even sustainable without somebody sponsoring their travel?

A few outcomes that attendees can expect:
  • Insights on the future of branded content and the relationship between editorial and marketing today.
  • An awareness of potential opportunities for content creators beyond traditional editorial.
  • A look at how the paradigm has shifted on sponsored travel and content, both for new and established publications, as well as writers.
  • Thoughts on how to navigate a changing media landscape while keeping your integrity intact.

Show Me the Way to the Next Whiskey Distiller: The Craft Distilling Boom and Distilleries as a Destination
The last 5 years have seen an explosion in the Craft Distilling Industry that mirrors the boom in other craft food sectors. However the distilling industry faces unique challenges ranging from more stringent laws and regulation to a much lower level of public awareness in comparison to craft beer for example. Nonetheless, craft distilleries are opening at a phenomenal rate and one can now visit distilleries throughout the country, particularly here in New York. The industry has been embraced by tourism and economic development officials not only as a creator of jobs and revenue but as a potential draw for visitors. This panel will discuss the growth of the industry, traveling to and visiting distilleries, and the industry’s place in the travel industry and how they are embracing their new status as a destination.

Cultural Supremacy in Travel Media (presented by Outbounding)
Limited Capacity seats available

Who gets to tell the world's stories?

This workshop will lead to a better understanding of how white cultural supremacy dictates the prism through which we view places, experiences, and people. We will discuss how to more accurately and respectfully represent different communities and cultures, rather than reinforcing existing paradigms of cultural supremacy and power. This is an extension of a recent discussion on Outbounding about diversity and cultural representation in travel writing. The topic affects all areas of travel media, from media outlets and publishers to writers, editors, public relations, and marketing, and advertising professionals. All industry trailblazers are invited to take part.

Some of the takeaways from this workshop are:
-- the problem of the ubiquitous whiteness in travel writing and blogging as a genre;
-- examples and some common arguments debunked of defending the status quo;
-- an exploration of class as an economic and racial divider and its role in reinforcing the system;
-- ways of effectively diversifying the genre;
-- how to tell better stories by dismantling embedded white cultural value systems.

Travel Writing Workshop (presented by Pink Pangea)
This workshop is designed for both frequent travelers as well as those of us who don’t always get to hop on a plane, but absolutely love to explore. Writing creates a space for us to process our experiences in a way that we hadn’t before, and uncover new insights. We’ll read compelling pieces, enjoy interactive activities, and process our own experiences on paper.

In this workshop we will:
-Understand our urge to write
-Explore some of the best travel writing
-Uncover insights from our past travel experiences
-Capture the sights, tastes, smells, and sounds that stimulate us
-Feel the impact our words have on other travelers

After completing workshops, participants have written for major publications, launched their own blogs, or continued to write in their journals. Others have simply enjoyed trying something new. At the end of the session there will be an opportunity to learn about how to get your travel writing published.

Curious On Tanzanian Music! Enjoy a live Tanzanian performance @NYTravFest 2015

We are excited to introduce Tina Kakolaki, an artist, born and raised in Tanzania.

She moved to USA to pursue collage education. Leaving behind her passion for singing for many years to fulfill the American dream. As life went on she noticed, she was living in a world where technology was gaining momentum while culture was getting less and less attention. As she searched to find a way to hold on to her culture, she got inspired to follow her lifelong passion for music. With her music, she looks to keep the African cultural values alive through her music, drumming, storytelling and dance. She also sings in three languages including her tribal language, Kihaya, Tanzanian’s national language, Kiswahili and English. She looks to share her passion for African music and rhythm as a way to maintain her roots.

About us: Curious on Tanzania is a social traveling platform that offers unique Tanzanian experience within and outside the country. Find out more by visiting curiousontanzania.com
